NewCo Co-Founder Brian Monahan’s Top Picks for NewCo LA!
Brian Monahan is the Co-Founder of NewCo and VP of Marketing at Walmart.com. Prior to Walmart.com, Brian spent a few years managing the IPG Media Lab in Los Angeles. Below are his recommendations for NewCo LA.
Wednesday, November 19
9:30 am: LA River Revitalization Corporation
My first session is a guilty pleasure. China Town is my favorite movie and anything to do with California water rights is fascinating. Plus what Gen Xer who grew up watching Grease does not want to learn about the future of the LA River? I also have a thing for good data visualization — Oblong Industries is my runner up recommendation in this timeslot.
11:00 am: Two Bit Circus
For all the innovation in underlying data and media form factors the content presentation layer still has room for growth. LA remains the entertainment capital of the world. I’m not exactly sure what is going on at Two Bit Circus. It appears to be a mashup of performers, coders, and makers. Whatever it is, it sounds cool!
1:30 pm: OneFineStay
I’m sure they hate this analogy but OneFineStay seems like AirBNB for rich people’s homes. Complete with maid service! Participant Media will no doubt be a popular session in this time slot. It is also always helpful to get Michael Kassan’s take on the on the marketing world over at Medialink.
3:00 pm: NOVICA
NOVICA is innovating in retail by helping true artisans sell to a broad market. They partner with folks like KIVA and National Geographic to identify these artisans. And then help the customers interact directly with the craftsmen. There are lots of good choices in this time slot. ParkMe helps streamline urban parking — be sure to download before NewCo LA! Rubicon Project is one of the leaders in programmatic advertising. Demand Media is also an industry leader in content marketing.
4:30 pm: Epoxy
It is no surprise that the creative community in LA has embraced YouTube as their outlet of choice to connect with fans. Epoxy is building tools to help YouTube artists develop an audience. In addition to content creation, the Southland also has a great track record for targeted ad technology. There are some other sessions in this time slot showcasing great innovation in advertising – be it mobile ads with AdColony and MomentFeed or in-image ads with GumGum.
I hope you enjoy the day checking out the scene in LA. Be sure to take advantage of the friendly nature of Southern Californians to do some networking and make some new contacts!
